About the Event

Join us at Ruskins Bar for a night of esoteric live music; an eclectic mix of highly danceable klezmer-punk courtesy of Buffo's Wake, accompanied by beautiful and soulful electronica and piano laden dream-pop from Ebony Grace.

Doors at 8pm

Ebony Grace - 8:30pm

Buffo's Wake - 9:40pm

Ebony Grace:

Soulful melodies entwine with synths, glitching electronics and heartfelt piano to produce a sound that is universally compelling, whilst still pushing at the boundaries of modern pop.

Ebony Grace's solo performances are the perfect combination of singer-songwriter honesty and craft, with the production values and musicality of something much larger. Catch her here at Ruskin's before a Summer of festival performances steal her away.

Buffo's Wake:

Buffo’s Wake is a twelve-legged beast, hatched in the murky backwater of Brighton, UK. Armed with accordions, violins and a bucket full of gusto they waltz, tango, mosh and kolo their way through a vast array of influences from Eastern European, Balkan and Russian folk, to punk rock and cabaret, telling tales of debauchery, deformity, zombies, incest and anatomy and making audiences dance late into the night in the process.

Musical schizophrenics, drawing from diverse backgrounds ranging from Drum n’ Bass DJ’s to classically trained string players, punks to funk players and poets to showmen, you’re never quite sure what to expect next from Buffo’s Wake.

In their time together, they have toured all over the world, finding an inspired, confused, sweaty, and often very drunk reception everywhere they go.

Gypsy, Balkan and Klezmer Carnival Punks – with influences from Abba to Zappa, Buffo’s Wake are guaranteed to leave you dancing like a man possessed!

‘Combining fast-paced folk, carnivalesque humour, lewd tango and gypsy intricacies into a highly energetic, gleefully anarchic explosion. As influenced by the grime and darkness of Nick Cave as they are by Balkan folk and Ukrainian hooligans Gogol Bordello, Buffo’s Wake delight in sudden gear shifts, baffling non-sequiturs and a healthy sense of the absurd, and are undoubtedly the perfect accompaniment to an evening of knees-up silliness, preferably having consumed an obscene quantity of cider. Come and have a go if you think you’ve got the stamina!’

– Electric Harmony

‘THE band to watch out for at Glastonbury 2015’

-Marc Radcliffe (BBC 6 Music)

‘You may recall a desolate band of misfits in Tim Burton’s ‘Nightmare Before Chirstmas’ that popped up every now and then with musical interludes of damp and haunting melodies that were, in their own way, quite captivating. Well Buffo’s Wake have a very similar allure; that is intriguing violins and erratic accordions, both utterly besmirched with wonderfully gloomy undertones and lingering vocals.’

– Boomtown Fair
